About
Biography
Iraj Tavakoly (b. 1996, Bandar Abbas, Iran) is a self-taught image-based artist who began his professional practice in 2016. Working through a research-driven approach, he develops long-term projects that explore contemporary social conditions, their relationship to modernity and postmodernity, and themes of memory, archives, identity, and history.
While photography marked the beginning of his artistic practice, his work has gradually expanded to incorporate digital collage, mixed media, and video art. Rather than adhering to a single medium, he selects the form and medium of each project according to its conceptual and research requirements.
His projects emerge from diverse points of departure, ranging from social events and lived experiences to texts, images, and archival materials. Through an extended process of research, these starting points evolve into independent bodies of work, each investigating a distinct conceptual concern.
